What Is Half Caf Coffee and Who Is It For?

Half caf is the coffee equivalent of turning the volume down instead of switching it off. So what is half caf coffee, exactly? It is a mix of regular, caffeinated coffee and decaf, usually in equal parts, so each cup carries roughly half the caffeine of a normal cup while keeping the full taste, aroma and ritual. You can order it in many cafés (“half-caf, please”), buy it pre-blended, or mix it yourself at home in any ratio you like.

This guide explains how much caffeine half caf really contains, who it suits, how to make it at home with a simple ratio table, and the mistakes that make it taste worse than it should.

Key takeaways

  • Half caf blends regular coffee and decaf, usually 50/50, for about half the caffeine.
  • Using the FDA’s range of about 113–247 mg of caffeine in a 12 oz cup of brewed coffee, a 12 oz half caf lands around 56–124 mg, plus the small amount from the decaf portion.
  • It suits people cutting back gradually, afternoon drinkers, caffeine-sensitive people and anyone who wants a second or third cup without the jitters.
  • Pre-blended half caf is the easiest choice; mixing your own lets you fine-tune the ratio.

What is half caf coffee?

“Half caf” is short for half caffeinated. It is not a special bean or a new decaf process. It is simply a blend of two things you already know:

  • Regular coffee, with its natural caffeine.
  • Decaf coffee, which has had most of its caffeine removed before roasting. Methods include water-based processes and solvent-based processes; our guide on how decaf coffee is made explains the differences.

Mix them half and half and you get a cup that tastes like coffee, smells like coffee and brews like coffee, with about half the stimulant. Baristas make it by pulling one regular and one decaf shot, or by mixing two batch-brewed coffees. Roasters make it by blending regular and decaf beans before bagging.

How much caffeine is in half caf coffee?

Caffeine in coffee varies with the beans, the roast, the brewing method and the cup size, so any number is a range. The US Food and Drug Administration puts a 12 oz cup of brewed coffee at roughly 113–247 mg. Half of that range is about 56–124 mg, before adding the small amount that decaf still contains. Decaf is not completely caffeine-free; see how much caffeine is in decaf.

Ratio (regular : decaf) Name you might use Approx. caffeine in a 12 oz brewed cup*
100 : 0 Regular 113–247 mg
75 : 25 “Three-quarter caf” 85–185 mg
50 : 50 Half caf 56–124 mg
25 : 75 “Quarter caf” 28–62 mg
0 : 100 Decaf A small amount

*Calculated from the FDA range for regular brewed coffee; the decaf portion adds a little more. For comparison, the FDA lists about 71 mg for a 12 oz black tea and about 37 mg for green tea.

Worked example: fitting half caf into your day

The FDA cites up to 400 mg of caffeine a day as an amount not generally associated with negative effects for most healthy adults. Say your regular coffee sits near the top of the range at about 240 mg per 12 oz. Two cups would be about 480 mg. Switch the second cup to half caf (about 120 mg) and your total drops to roughly 360 mg. Switch both and you are near 240 mg, with the same two mugs on your desk.

How to make half caf at home

Option 1: buy it pre-blended

The simplest route. Our Half Caf is a smooth, balanced medium roast that blends regular coffee with water-process decaf, roasted 1–5 days before delivery. Choose whole beans, or Coarse, Espresso or Standard grind for your brewer.

Option 2: mix your own

  1. Pick two coffees with similar roast levels. A medium regular with a medium decaf blends seamlessly. Our Peru Decaf, a medium roast with caramel and citrus notes, pairs naturally with a medium roast such as our Breakfast Blend.
  2. Weigh, do not eyeball. For a 50/50 brew using 20 g of coffee, use 10 g regular and 10 g decaf.
  3. Mix the beans before grinding so the blend is even. If you buy ground coffee, stir both thoroughly in a jar.
  4. Label the jar with the ratio. Future you will thank you.

Option 3: for espresso drinks

Make a double shot with one regular and one decaf shot, or dose half of each into the basket. For a decaf espresso half, our Decaf Espresso is roasted dark specifically for espresso.

Common half caf mistakes

  • Mixing very different roasts. A light regular with a very dark decaf grind and extract differently, giving an uneven, muddled cup.
  • Mixing different grind sizes. Fine and coarse grounds together extract unevenly. Match the grind.
  • Using stale decaf. Decaf beans often sit on shelves longer. Buy fresh-roasted decaf in smaller bags.
  • Assuming “half” is exact. It is roughly half; real caffeine content varies with beans and brewing.

Half caf coffee FAQ

Does half caf taste different from regular coffee?

With a good blend of similar roasts, most people cannot tell. Most of the flavor comes from the beans and roast; caffeine adds some bitterness but is only one part of the taste.

Is half caf the same as decaf?

No. Decaf has most of its caffeine removed. Half caf still has roughly half the caffeine of regular coffee.

Can I order half caf at a coffee shop?

Yes. Many cafés will happily make it, especially for espresso drinks. Just ask for “half-caf.”

Is half caf good for cutting down on caffeine?

It is one of the easiest ways to step down gradually, because your routine and taste stay the same while the caffeine drops.
