Pink Lattes for Valentine’s Day

1. Strawberry Pink Latte

This gets its color from a quick homemade strawberry syrup.

Strawberry syrup (enough for 4 lattes): 1 cup (150 g) chopped strawberries, fresh or frozen, ½ cup (100 g) sugar, ½ cup (120 ml) water.

Latte: 2 espresso shots or 4 oz (120 ml) strong coffee, 6 oz (180 ml) milk, 2 tbsp (30 ml) strawberry syrup.

  1. Simmer the strawberries, sugar and water for 10 minutes, mashing the fruit. Strain and cool.
  2. Stir the syrup into the cold or warm milk; this is what turns it pink.
  3. Steam or froth the pink milk.
  4. Pour it over the coffee. For the prettiest look, pour the coffee gently over the pink milk instead, so the layers show in a clear glass.

It is also lovely iced. Our iced latte recipe explains the basics.

2. Beet Pink Latte (caffeine-free)

Not every pink latte contains coffee. This one is a fun option for evening or for guests who skip caffeine.

  • 8 oz (240 ml) milk or oat milk
  • 1 tsp beetroot powder
  • 1–2 tsp (5–10 ml) honey or maple syrup
  • ¼ tsp vanilla extract and a pinch of cinnamon
  1. Warm the milk until steaming.
  2. Whisk in the beet powder, sweetener, vanilla and cinnamon until smooth.
  3. Froth and serve in your favorite mug.

Bonus: a color-changing tea

For a little kitchen magic, brew Butterfly Blue tea, made with butterfly pea flower. It brews deep blue and turns purple when you squeeze in some lemon.

Chocolate Valentine’s Day Coffee

3. Dark Chocolate Mocha

  • 2 espresso shots or 4 oz (120 ml) strong coffee
  • 1 oz (30 g) dark chocolate, finely chopped
  • 6 oz (180 ml) milk
  • Whipped cream and cocoa powder for topping
  1. Melt the chocolate into the hot coffee, stirring until smooth.
  2. Steam or froth the milk and pour it over the chocolate coffee.
  3. Top with whipped cream and dust cocoa through a heart-shaped paper stencil.

For a deeper chocolate flavor without extra effort, brew it with Mocha flavored coffee. Our full guide on how to make a café mocha covers more variations.

4. Raspberry White Mocha

  • 2 espresso shots or 4 oz (120 ml) strong coffee
  • 1 oz (30 g) white chocolate
  • 6 oz (180 ml) milk
  • 1 tbsp (15 ml) raspberry jam or syrup
  1. Melt the white chocolate into the warm milk over low heat.
  2. Stir the raspberry jam into the hot coffee until dissolved.
  3. Froth the chocolate milk and pour it over the coffee. Garnish with a fresh raspberry.

How to Pour a Latte Art Heart

The heart is the first shape most baristas learn, and it is perfect for Valentine’s Day. You need an espresso machine with a steam wand and a small pitcher with a spout.

  1. Pull a fresh shot. Good crema gives you a canvas. Our article on espresso crema explains what makes it.
  2. Steam the milk. Use cold whole milk. Briefly let air in at the start to create a little foam, then sink the wand to swirl the milk until the pitcher is hot to the touch, around 140–150°F (60–65°C). Aim for glossy microfoam, not stiff bubbles.
  3. Swirl and tap. Tap the pitcher on the counter to pop big bubbles and swirl until the milk looks like wet paint.
  4. Pour from high. Tilt the cup and pour a thin stream from a few inches up into the center to mix milk and coffee.
  5. Drop low. When the cup is about half full, bring the spout close to the surface. A white circle will appear. Keep pouring steadily so it grows.
  6. Cut through. When the cup is nearly full, lift the pitcher slightly and draw a quick line through the circle toward the far side. That line pulls it into a heart.

Do not worry if your first few look more like blobs. Even lopsided hearts taste great. No machine? Froth milk in a jar and use a toothpick to drag a heart shape into the foam.

Sweets to Serve With Valentine’s Coffee

  • Chocolate-dipped strawberries. Classic, easy and perfect with a mocha.
  • Affogato for two. A scoop of vanilla ice cream drowned in hot espresso. See our affogato recipe.
  • Heart-shaped shortbread. Buttery cookies balance a strong coffee.
  • Tiramisu cups. Make them the night before for a no-stress dessert.
  • Macarons or truffles. Store-bought is perfectly fine.

Valentine’s Day Coffee FAQ

What makes a pink latte pink?

Pink lattes get their color from ingredients such as strawberry syrup, beetroot powder or other naturally colored powders mixed into the milk. Some pink lattes contain coffee, while others, like beet lattes, are caffeine-free.

Can I make latte art without an espresso machine?

True free-pour latte art needs well-steamed microfoam and espresso crema, which are hard to get without a machine. You can still decorate frothed milk using a toothpick, a cocoa stencil or a drizzle of chocolate syrup.

What coffee is best for a Valentine’s mocha?

A medium-dark or dark roast with chocolatey notes works best, since it stands up to the chocolate and milk. A chocolate-flavored coffee adds extra richness without more sugar.

What is a romantic coffee for breakfast in bed?

A heart latte or a mocha topped with whipped cream is hard to beat. Pair it with fresh fruit and a pastry for a simple, special morning.

Share the Love, One Cup at a Time

A pink latte, a chocolate mocha or a carefully poured heart can turn an ordinary morning into a Valentine’s Day moment. Keep it simple and focus on the person you are sharing it with.
