TikTok Coffee Hacks: Which Ones Actually Work?
Share
Some viral coffee hacks genuinely work: coffee ice cubes, shaking espresso with ice, frothing milk in a jar and making cold brew in a French press all deliver. Others are more about looking good on camera than tasting good in the cup. We tested the logic behind the most common TikTok coffee hacks and sorted them into keep, tweak or skip, so you know which ones are worth your beans.
Our verdicts are based on how coffee actually brews and tastes, not on view counts. We skip the salt hack here because it deserves its own deep dive.

Coffee Hacks That Actually Work
Coffee ice cubes
Freeze leftover brewed coffee or cold brew in an ice tray, then use the cubes in iced coffee. As they melt, your drink gets stronger instead of watery. Use them within about a week for the cleanest flavor, and try them in iced lattes too. For a full method, see how to make iced coffee.
Shaken espresso in a jar
Pour one or two hot shots of espresso (or 2 oz / 60 ml of strong moka pot coffee) into a jar with a handful of ice and a little syrup, seal and shake hard for 15 seconds. The coffee chills instantly and develops a light, foamy texture. Top with milk. Our brown sugar shaken espresso recipe is the perfect place to start.
Frothing milk in a jar
Fill a microwave-safe jar no more than halfway with milk, seal and shake for 30 to 45 seconds until it doubles in volume. Remove the lid and microwave for about 30 seconds to stabilize the foam. It is not quite steamed-milk microfoam, but it makes a very respectable latte. More methods in our guide on how to froth milk.
French press cold brew
A French press is a ready-made cold brew maker: add coarse grounds and cold water, steep in the fridge, then press. A 1:8 ratio, such as 1 cup (about 85 g) of coarse coffee to 3 cups (720 ml) of water, makes a concentrate to dilute with water or milk. Steep 12 to 18 hours. Our full cold brew guide covers ratios and timing.
Coffee Hacks That Need a Tweak
Whipped (dalgona) coffee
Equal parts instant coffee, sugar and hot water whip into a thick, glossy foam to spoon over milk. It works, but only with instant coffee, and the classic 1:1:1 ratio is very sweet. Try cutting the sugar slightly and using cold milk. Our dalgona coffee recipe has the details, and Instant Coffee is the right base.
Ice cream as creamer
A scoop of vanilla ice cream in hot coffee is basically an affogato. It is delicious, but it adds a lot of sugar, so treat it as dessert. Use a strong brew so the coffee does not get lost.
Spices in the grounds
Mixing about 1/4 teaspoon of ground cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice into the grounds before brewing adds aroma without syrups. Go easy: too much spice can turn dusty and bitter, and fine powders can slow down drainage in some filters. A flavored coffee like Cinnabun gives a similar effect with zero fuss.
Butter in coffee
Blending butter or oil into coffee creates a rich, creamy drink. Whether you love it is personal taste. It adds significant calories and is not a health shortcut, whatever some videos claim. Read our balanced take on bulletproof coffee.
Coffee Hacks to Skip
Microwaving yesterday’s coffee
Reheating is safe, but brewed coffee keeps changing as it sits. Reheated coffee tends to taste flat and more bitter. Better options: turn leftovers into coffee ice cubes, or brew a smaller batch. If you often have extra, our guide to scaling coffee recipes helps you brew just enough.
Keeping open beans in the fridge
The fridge seems like a freshness hack, but opening a cold container lets condensation form on the beans, and coffee easily absorbs food odors. A cool, dark cabinet in an airtight container is better. Long-term freezing in sealed portions is a different story; see can you freeze coffee beans.
How to Spot a Bad Coffee Hack
- It promises health miracles. Coffee hacks that claim to melt fat or flush your system are marketing, not science.
- It hides bad coffee. Many hacks mask stale or burnt coffee with sugar. Fresh beans often solve the problem better.
- It only works on camera. Layered drinks and towering foam can look great and taste unbalanced.
- It ignores ratio and grind. The real hack is the boring one: fresh beans, the right grind and a scale.
Coffee Hacks FAQ
What is the best coffee hack for iced coffee?
Coffee ice cubes. They keep iced coffee strong as they melt. Pair them with a cold brew concentrate for the smoothest result.
Can you make cold brew in a French press?
Yes. Add coarse grounds and cold water, steep 12 to 18 hours in the fridge, then press slowly and pour. Dilute the concentrate to taste.
Does dalgona coffee work with regular ground coffee?
No. Whipped coffee needs instant coffee, which dissolves fully and foams. Ground coffee will not whip into a stable foam.
How can I make cheap coffee taste better?
Start with fresher beans, grind just before brewing, use a scale for the right ratio and clean your brewer. These basics beat any viral trick.
