Coffee in The Sims: Espresso Machines, Energy and Real Coffee Tips
Share
Sims coffee is a quick energy fix: in every main game of the series, a mug from a coffee maker or espresso machine raises your Sim’s Energy, usually at the cost of a faster-filling Bladder. In The Sims 4, coffee makers brew several servings at once, the Get Together expansion adds an espresso bar, and the base game includes a part-time Barista career. Real life works a little differently, so below we also share practical tips for making café-style drinks at home.
The Sims is developed by Maxis and published by Electronic Arts. Coffee has been part of the household routine since the very first game in 2000, and it has evolved with each sequel.
How Sims Coffee Works, Game by Game
Each generation handled coffee a bit differently. Here is a quick overview.
| Game | Coffee gear | What coffee does |
|---|---|---|
| The Sims (2000) | Basic coffee maker and an espresso machine | Small Energy boost, lowers Bladder; the espresso machine also adds Fun but breaks often |
| The Sims 2 (2004) | Coffee makers and an espresso machine | A pot makes multiple mugs; raises Energy, lowers Bladder, some models add Fun |
| The Sims 3 (2009) | Coffee makers across the base game and expansions | Gives a “buzzed” state during which Sims cannot sleep and act as if fully rested |
| The Sims 4 (2014) | Coffee makers, plus an espresso bar from Get Together | Each brew makes servings that raise Energy and Hunger and lower Bladder |
The Sims 3: the buzz is borrowed time
The Sims 3 has one of the most interesting takes. Coffee does not actually refill Energy. Instead, while the buzz lasts, the Sim behaves as if Energy were full and cannot nap. When it wears off, the real tiredness is still there. Real caffeine is not that simple, but the idea that coffee masks tiredness rather than replacing sleep is a surprisingly good lesson.
The Sims 4: coffee makers and the espresso bar
In The Sims 4, coffee makers range from cheap basic models to pricier upgraded ones. Each brew costs a few Simoleons and makes multiple servings, so the whole household can grab a mug. The Get Together expansion pack adds an espresso bar, introduced at the café venue in the world of Windenburg, where Sims can order or make drinks.
The Sims 4 Barista Career
If your Sim loves coffee enough to make it a job, the part-time Barista career is included in The Sims 4 base game. Shifts are early in the morning, and the career has three levels: Coffee Stain Remover, Bean Blender and Latte Artist. Promotion to the second rank requires some Mixology skill, so practicing drinks helps your Sim climb.
It is a fun way to roleplay a teen or young adult saving money, or a Sim who dreams of running a café. You can check the details on EA’s official Barista career help page.
Sims Coffee vs Real Coffee
A few ways the game and reality line up, and a few ways they do not:
- Energy: In the game, coffee tops up a bar. In real life, caffeine can make you feel more alert, but it does not replace sleep.
- Bladder: Sims rush to the bathroom after coffee. Real coffee in moderate amounts does not dehydrate most regular drinkers, as we explain in does coffee dehydrate you.
- Timing: Sims can down espresso at midnight and pass out at 2 a.m. For humans, a late cup can disrupt sleep, so read caffeine and sleep before your next late-night building session.
- Limits: For most healthy adults, the FDA cites up to 400 mg of caffeine a day as an amount not generally associated with negative effects. If you are pregnant, have a medical condition or take medication, ask your doctor.
Real Coffee Tips: Make Café Drinks Like a Sim Barista
Your Sim can learn latte art in a few in-game days. Here is how to start in real life.
1. Start with fresh beans
Freshness makes the biggest difference in flavor. Coffee that was roasted recently has more aroma than a bag that has sat on a shelf for months. Read why in fresh roasted vs supermarket coffee.
2. Get the ratio right
For drip or French press, start with about 1 part coffee to 16 parts water, for example 15 g of coffee to 240 ml (8 fl oz) of water. Our coffee to water ratio guide covers every method.
3. Pull a simple espresso
A standard double shot uses about 18 g of finely ground coffee to produce about 36 g (roughly 1.3 fl oz) of espresso in 25–30 seconds. No machine? A moka pot gives a strong, espresso-style coffee. See our espresso at home guide.
4. Build classic café drinks
- Latte: 1 double espresso + 6–8 fl oz (180–240 ml) steamed milk with a thin layer of foam.
- Cappuccino: 1 double espresso + about 4 fl oz (120 ml) milk with a thick foam cap.
- Mocha: a latte with 1 tbsp (15 ml) chocolate syrup stirred into the espresso.
- Iced coffee: strong brewed coffee poured over a full glass of ice.
Not sure what separates these drinks? Check latte vs cappuccino vs flat white.
5. Practice milk foam
Use cold whole milk for the easiest foam. With a steam wand, keep the tip just below the surface until the milk grows by about a third, then sink it lower to swirl. A handheld frother or a French press pumped up and down also works.
A Sims-Inspired Coffee Menu
These are original, unofficial ideas for a building session:
- The Plumbob Matcha Latte: a green matcha latte, nodding to the iconic green diamond.
- The Simoleon Caramel Latte: a latte made with Caramel flavored coffee and a drizzle of caramel.
- The Late Night Decaf: a decaf latte for long build-mode sessions after dark.

How do you get an espresso machine in The Sims 4?
The espresso bar comes with the Get Together expansion pack, which introduced a café venue in Windenburg. The base game includes regular coffee makers in Buy Mode.

From Build Mode to Brew Mode
Sims coffee is a tiny game mechanic with a lot of charm, and it is easy to bring to your real kitchen.
