Spring Coffee Drinks: Floral and Fruity Recipes

Spring arrives on Saturday, March 20, 2027, the day of the March equinox, and your coffee can change with the season. These spring coffee drinks swap winter’s cinnamon and nutmeg for rose, orange blossom, strawberry and hibiscus: lighter, brighter flavors that work hot on chilly mornings and over ice on the first warm afternoons. Each recipe takes under 10 minutes and uses ingredients you can find in a well-stocked grocery store.

You will also find a dosing chart for floral ingredients, because the difference between “lovely” and “soap” is often a few drops.

Spring coffee drinks: the flavor rules

  • Pick a lighter coffee. Floral and fruit flavors get buried under very dark roasts. A medium or medium-light coffee, or a smooth cold brew, lets them show.
  • Floral waters are potent. Rose water and orange blossom water are measured in drops or fractions of a teaspoon, not tablespoons.
  • Sweetness carries aroma. A little honey or simple syrup makes floral notes taste rounder. You can still keep sugar low.
  • Use food-grade ingredients only. Buy rose water and orange blossom water sold for cooking, culinary lavender and edible flowers that were grown without pesticides. Decorative flowers from a florist are not safe to eat.

Rose cardamom latte

Warm, softly perfumed and great for a cool spring morning. Cardamom keeps the rose from tasting like a candle.

Ingredients (1 drink)

  • 2 oz (60 ml) espresso, or 1/2 cup (120 ml) very strong brewed coffee
  • 1 cup (240 ml) whole milk or oat milk
  • 1 tbsp (15 ml) simple syrup or honey
  • 1/4 tsp (1.25 ml) food-grade rose water
  • 1 small pinch ground cardamom
  • Optional garnish: a few dried edible rose petals

Steps

  1. Pull the espresso or brew the coffee into your mug.
  2. Stir in the syrup, cardamom and rose water.
  3. Steam or heat the milk to about 140 to 150°F (60 to 65°C) and froth it.
  4. Pour the milk over the coffee, holding back the foam with a spoon, then top with foam and petals.

Tip: add the rose water, taste, then add more. Brands vary a lot in strength.

Strawberry cream cold brew

Fresh strawberries and cold brew sound unusual, but the jammy fruit and chocolatey coffee taste like a chocolate-dipped berry.

Ingredients (1 drink)

  • 4 to 5 ripe strawberries (about 2.5 oz / 70 g), hulled
  • 2 tsp (8 g) sugar or 2 tsp (10 ml) maple syrup
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) cold brew coffee, ready to drink
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) milk or half-and-half
  • Ice

Steps

  1. Mash the strawberries with the sugar in the bottom of a tall glass until juicy. Let sit 5 minutes.
  2. Fill the glass with ice.
  3. Pour in the cold brew.
  4. Top with the milk and stir gently just before drinking.

Make-ahead: blend 1 cup (150 g) strawberries with 1/4 cup (50 g) sugar and 2 tbsp water for a quick syrup. It keeps about 5 days in the fridge.

Orange blossom honey iced latte

Orange blossom water smells like a citrus grove in bloom. With honey and espresso, it makes an iced latte that tastes like spring sunshine.

Ingredients (1 drink)

  • 2 oz (60 ml) hot espresso
  • 2 tsp (14 g) honey
  • 1/8 tsp (0.6 ml) orange blossom water
  • 3/4 cup (180 ml) cold milk
  • Ice
  • Optional: a strip of orange zest

Steps

  1. Stir the honey into the hot espresso until dissolved. Honey will not mix into cold drinks, so this step matters.
  2. Add the orange blossom water.
  3. Fill a glass with ice and pour in the milk.
  4. Pour the sweetened espresso over the top. Twist the orange zest over the glass to release its oils.

Hibiscus berry cold brew spritz

A bright, fizzy, deep-red drink for the first warm weekend. Tart hibiscus makes fruity coffee taste even juicier.

Ingredients (1 drink)

  • 2 tsp (about 3 g) hibiscus herbal tea
  • 1/3 cup (80 ml) just-boiled water
  • 1 tbsp (15 ml) honey or simple syrup
  • 1/3 cup (80 ml) cold brew coffee, ready to drink
  • 1/3 cup (80 ml) chilled sparkling water
  • Ice and a few berries to garnish

Steps

  1. Steep the hibiscus tea in the hot water for 5 minutes, strain and stir in the honey. Cool completely (or chill in the fridge).
  2. Fill a glass with ice. Add the hibiscus syrup, then the cold brew.
  3. Top with sparkling water and stir once. Garnish with berries.

Tip: this works best with fruity, lighter coffee. A very dark roast can clash with the tartness.

More bubbly ideas

If you like coffee with fizz, try an espresso tonic with a splash of elderflower cordial for an easy spring twist.

Floral dosing chart

Start low. You can always add, but you cannot take a floral note back out.

Ingredient Start with (per 8 to 12 oz drink) Pairs with Too much tastes like
Rose water 1/8 to 1/4 tsp (0.6 to 1.25 ml) Cardamom, pistachio, strawberry Soap or perfume
Orange blossom water 1/8 tsp (0.6 ml) Honey, citrus zest, almond Bitter perfume
Culinary lavender 1/4 tsp dried, steeped in syrup then strained Honey, vanilla, lemon Soap
Hibiscus tea 1 to 2 tsp, steeped then strained Berries, ginger, citrus Very sour
Elderflower cordial 1 to 2 tsp (5 to 10 ml) Tonic, lemon, cold brew Overly sweet

Lighter and dairy-free options

  • Dairy-free: oat milk froths well and its gentle sweetness suits rose and orange blossom. Almond milk pairs nicely with orange blossom.
  • Lower sugar: halve the syrup or honey in any recipe. Floral notes still come through; they just taste drier.
  • Caffeine-free: the hibiscus spritz works with decaf cold brew, or skip the coffee entirely and use more hibiscus and sparkling water.

Which coffee to use

For floral and fruity drinks, choose a coffee that already leans that way. Our Ethiopia Natural brings milk chocolate, ripe fruit and caramel, ideal for the hibiscus spritz and the rose latte. Blonde is a light, sweet blend that makes gentle espresso for the orange blossom latte. For the strawberry drink, our coarse ground cold brew coffee makes a smooth, low-acid concentrate with dark chocolate notes. And for the spritz base, Hibiscus Berry tea is caffeine-free with blueberry and currant notes.

Spring coffee drinks FAQ

What flavors are good in coffee for spring?

Rose, orange blossom, lavender, honey, strawberry, hibiscus, elderflower and citrus zest. They are lighter than winter spices and pair best with medium or lighter roasts.

Is rose water safe to drink in coffee?

Food-grade rose water sold for cooking is used in drinks and desserts in many cuisines. Avoid cosmetic rose water, which is not made to be eaten, and use small amounts.

Can I make these drinks with regular brewed coffee?

Yes. Use about 1/2 cup (120 ml) of strong brewed coffee in place of a double espresso, and reduce the milk slightly so the flavor stays bold.

When is the first day of spring in 2027?

The March equinox falls on Saturday, March 20, 2027, which marks the start of astronomical spring in the Northern Hemisphere.
