Café Leblanc in Persona 5: How to Brew Sojiro's Coffee at Home
Share
In Persona 5, coffee is brewed at Café Leblanc, the tiny backstreet café run by Sojiro Sakura, where the hero lives in the attic and learns to make coffee and curry in the evenings. Brewed coffee becomes an item that restores SP during dungeon runs. To recreate Persona 5 coffee at home, brew a medium-dark, full-bodied coffee slowly and carefully in a siphon or pour-over, the way a classic Japanese kissaten would.
Here is how Leblanc fits into the game, what Sojiro teaches you, and a step-by-step guide to brewing a Leblanc-style cup in your own kitchen.
Café Leblanc: The Heart of Persona 5
Persona 5 is a role-playing game developed by Atlus. It launched in Japan in 2016 and in North America in April 2017 on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. The expanded edition, Persona 5 Royal, arrived in the West in 2020 and later came to Nintendo Switch, Windows and Xbox.
The story follows a high school student sent to Tokyo on probation. His guardian, Sojiro, owns Leblanc, a quiet, wood-paneled café in the Yongen-Jaya neighborhood, and gives him the dusty attic as a bedroom. Leblanc becomes the Phantom Thieves' hideout, the place where plans are made over cups of coffee and plates of curry.
The café looks like a traditional Japanese kissaten: a long counter, a few booths, warm lamps, jars of beans and an old TV. It is a place where coffee is made slowly, one cup at a time.
How Persona 5 Coffee Works in the Game
As you rank up your Confidant relationship with Sojiro, he starts teaching you to brew. From then on, coffee becomes an evening activity at the counter.
- When: only in the evening, and only when no customers are in the café.
- What you get: one cup per session in the original game, two in Royal.
- Trivia: brewing sessions come with notes about beans, origins, blends and brewing methods.
- Royal bonus: in Persona 5 Royal, brewing coffee also raises your Charm.
- Help: later, your teacher Sadayo Kawakami can brew coffee for you as part of her Confidant.
The two coffee items restore SP, the energy used for magic skills:
| Item | Unlocked at Sojiro rank | Effect in battle |
|---|---|---|
| Leblanc Coffee | Rank 2 | Restores 30 SP to one ally |
| Master Coffee | Rank 6 | Restores 100 SP to one ally |
| Leblanc Curry | Rank 9 | Restores 30 SP to all allies |
| Master Curry | Rank 10 | Restores 100 SP to all allies |
Curry is the other half of the Leblanc legend. Sojiro serves it with coffee, and you can cook it on certain days of the week when ingredients are in the fridge. Coffee and Japanese curry is a classic kissaten pairing, and it works: the roasted bitterness of a strong cup cuts right through a rich, spiced curry.
Choosing Beans for a Leblanc-Style Cup
The game never ties Leblanc to a single real coffee, so the goal is the feeling: a cup that is smooth, deep and satisfying with food. Kissaten coffee tends toward medium-dark to dark roasts with low acidity and plenty of body.
- House-style blend: our Latin American Blend is medium-dark, nutty and cocoa-rich, an easy everyday Leblanc cup.
- For curry nights: Sumatra is earthy and heavy-bodied, strong enough to stand next to spice. Learn why in our guide to Sumatra coffee.
- Master Coffee mood: French Roast brings the smoky intensity of a late-night strategy meeting.
Whatever you choose, buy whole beans and grind right before brewing, a habit any kissaten master would insist on. Our article on whole bean vs ground coffee explains why.
How to Brew Persona 5 Coffee at Home
Siphon and hand pour-over are both cherished methods in Japanese coffee houses. Pick the one that matches your gear.
Method 1: Siphon (Vacuum Pot)
A siphon looks like lab equipment and brews a clean, aromatic cup. For two cups:
- Fill the lower bulb with 360 ml (about 12 fl oz) of hot water.
- Fit the cloth or paper filter in the upper chamber and seat it loosely on top.
- Heat the bottom. When the water starts to rise, lock the upper chamber in place.
- Once most of the water has risen, add 24 g (about 4 tablespoons) of medium-fine ground coffee and stir gently so all the grounds are wet.
- Brew for about 60 to 90 seconds, then remove the heat.
- As the bottom cools, the coffee is pulled back down through the filter. Give it one gentle stir as it starts to fall.
- Remove the top chamber and pour.
Method 2: Pour-Over
For one cup, use 15 g (about 2.5 tablespoons) of medium-fine coffee and 250 ml (8.5 fl oz) of water just off the boil, around 93°C (200°F).
- Rinse the paper filter with hot water and discard that water.
- Add the coffee and pour about 30 ml (1 fl oz) of water to bloom it. Wait 30 to 40 seconds.
- Pour the rest in slow, small circles, keeping the water level steady.
- Aim for a total brew time of about 3 minutes. Too sour? Grind finer. Too bitter? Grind coarser.

Serve It Like Sojiro
- Warm your cup with hot water first so the coffee stays hot longer.
- Serve it black first, then offer milk and sugar on the side.
- Pair with a plate of Japanese curry rice for the full Leblanc experience.
