Majestic Café Porto History: The Belle Époque Coffee House

Halfway down Rua de Santa Catarina, one of Porto’s main shopping streets, a carved wooden facade and a pair of tall windows stop people mid-stride. Inside are mirrors, leather banquettes, cherubs and brass, and usually a queue. The Majestic Café Porto history is the story of a 1920s luxury café that opened under a different name, lost its shine for decades, and was rescued so completely that it is now one of the most photographed coffee houses in Europe.

Key takeaways

  • The café opened on 17 December 1921 as the Elite, according to Portugal’s official Comércio com História registry; some sources give 1922.
  • It was renamed Majestic because “Elite” sounded too monarchist for Porto’s republican, bourgeois customers.
  • After decades of decline it was recognized as of historical interest in 1983 and reopened after a major restoration in July 1994.
  • Portuguese writers such as José Régio and Teixeira de Pascoaes gave it its literary reputation; its link to J.K. Rowling is a popular, widely repeated story.

From the Elite to the Majestic

The café opened on 17 December 1921 at Rua de Santa Catarina 112, in the most central part of the city. Its first name was Elite. Portugal had become a republic only eleven years earlier, and according to the Comércio com História program (run by the Portuguese government to recognize historic shops), the word carried a monarchist flavor that did not sit well with Porto’s republican middle class. The owners changed it to Majestic, a name chosen to suggest Parisian glamour.

Paris was the model in every sense. Like the grand cafés of the French capital, the Majestic was meant to be an upmarket meeting place where the city’s well-off could see and be seen. A winter garden at the back once connected Rua de Santa Catarina to the parallel Rua Passos Manuel.

The Art Nouveau interior

The Majestic is decorated in the Art Nouveau style of the Belle Époque: curving wood, carved figures, large mirrors that multiply the room, ornate ceilings and chandeliers. Sources disagree on the designer. The Comércio com História listing and the Historic Cafés Route name architect João Queiroz, while the English Wikipedia article credits José Pinto de Oliveira. We have not found a primary document that settles it, so treat both attributions with care.

What everyone agrees on is the effect. The Majestic regularly appears in lists of the world’s most beautiful cafés, and the room is the main reason people line up outside.

Writers, aviators and Harry Potter

In its early decades the Majestic attracted intellectuals, bohemians and high-society regulars. The Historic Cafés Route, a European network of historic cafés, names the writers José Régio and Teixeira de Pascoaes and the philosopher Leonardo Coimbra among those who gave it literary standing. Comércio com História adds aviator Gago Coutinho, later an admiral, who visited several times, once with the actress Beatriz Costa.

The J.K. Rowling story

J.K. Rowling lived in Porto in the early 1990s, and the Historic Cafés Route says she spent much of her time at the Majestic while working on the first Harry Potter book. The story is repeated constantly by guides and travel sites. It is best treated as popular lore rather than documented fact: we have not found the author herself describing the Majestic as a writing spot, so enjoy it as a good story, not a certainty.

For other cafés with writers’ legends, read about Café de Flore and Les Deux Magots in Paris or Caffè Florian in Venice.

Decline and restoration

Grand cafés depend on a certain kind of city life, and the Majestic went through decades of decline in the 20th century. In 1983 it was recognized as a building of historical interest, which helped protect it. A major restoration followed, and the café reopened in July 1994 in its original Belle Époque style. Since then it has become one of Porto’s best-known sights.

Visiting the Majestic today

The café is still at Rua de Santa Catarina 112 on a pedestrian shopping street. A few practical points:

  • Expect a queue at peak times, especially afternoons and weekends. Early in the day is calmer.
  • Expect higher prices than a neighborhood café. You are paying for the room as much as the coffee.
  • Order like a local: a small, strong espresso, known in Porto as a cimbalino, or a galão, a tall milky coffee in a glass. Our guide to Portuguese coffee and the bica explains the menu.
  • Look up and around: the ceiling, mirrors and carved details are the point. Ask before photographing other guests.

Recreate a Porto coffee break at home

You cannot bring the mirrors home, but you can make the coffee. Pull a short, intense espresso and serve it with a pastry, Portuguese style. Our Italian Roast is our darkest roast, a slow-roasted blend of Arabica and Robusta with a thick crema and intense dark chocolate notes. For a fruitier shot with chocolate depth, try African Espresso, a medium-dark blend of Kenyan, Tanzanian and Ethiopian coffees, or browse our best sellers.
