Iconic Coffee Moments in Video Games
Share
Coffee in video games shows up as a power-up, a hangout spot, a collectible and sometimes the whole point of the game. Some of the most memorable examples are the Leblanc café in Persona 5, Brewster’s café The Roost in Animal Crossing, the speed-boosting coffee of Stardew Valley, the 100 coffee thermoses hidden in Alan Wake, Ignis’s canned coffee habit in Final Fantasy XV and the late-night café of Coffee Talk.
Here is a tour of those iconic coffee moments, what they do in the game and how to bring a little of each one into your own mug.
Persona 5: Life Above a Café
Atlus’s Persona 5 first launched in Japan in 2016 and worldwide in 2017. Its hero lives in the attic of Leblanc, a small, old-fashioned coffee shop in a quiet Tokyo backstreet run by his guardian, Sojiro Sakura. The café becomes the team’s home base, where plans are made and evenings wind down.
Coffee is more than decoration. Sojiro can teach the protagonist to brew coffee, and the drinks you make become useful items for your adventures. The calm, warm atmosphere of Leblanc, with its counter and booths, is one of the reasons so many players fell in love with the game.
Bring it home: a carefully brewed pour-over or siphon-style cup of a single origin. Try our Colombia or explore the single origins collection.
Animal Crossing: Brewster and The Roost
In Nintendo’s Animal Crossing series, The Roost is a cozy café run by Brewster, a quiet pigeon who takes his coffee very seriously. It appears in Animal Crossing: Wild World and City Folk, as a public works project in New Leaf, and in New Horizons, where it arrived with the free 2.0 update and sits inside the museum.
In New Leaf, players can even take a part-time job at the café, matching each customer’s preferred amount of beans, milk and sugar. In New Horizons, you can sit at the counter for a cup and, after a few visits, order coffee to go.
Bring it home: a gentle, comforting cup like our Breakfast Blend, served with just the right splash of milk.
Stardew Valley: Coffee as a Speed Boost
In Stardew Valley, created by Eric Barone (ConcernedApe) and released in 2016, coffee is a practical farming tool. Drinking a cup gives a temporary speed boost, which helps when your farm gets big. You can buy coffee at the Stardrop Saloon or grow coffee beans and turn them into coffee in a keg.
There is also a Triple Shot Espresso, made from three coffees, that gives a longer speed boost along with a little energy and health. It is a fun nod to how people use espresso in real life on busy days.
Bring it home: a triple-shot style drink with a bold blend. Our guide to ristretto vs lungo vs espresso helps you dial in the shots.
Alan Wake: 100 Coffee Thermoses
Remedy Entertainment’s Alan Wake, released in 2010, is a psychological thriller set in the small town of Bright Falls. Among its collectibles are 100 coffee thermoses scattered through the dark forests and buildings. Hunting for them became a running joke among fans and a nod to the small-town diner culture that shapes the game’s mood.
Bring it home: a big thermos of classic diner-style coffee, like Gourmet Donut Shop, for a late-night horror session. Keep the lights on.
Final Fantasy XV: Ignis and His Canned Coffee
Square Enix’s Final Fantasy XV, released in 2016, follows Prince Noctis and his three friends on a road trip. Ignis, the group’s cook and strategist, is famous among fans for his fondness for Ebony, a fictional brand of canned coffee in the game. It is a small character detail that made him instantly relatable to every coffee drinker who has grabbed a can at a gas station.
Bring it home: make your own road-trip coffee with a dark roast poured over ice. Our Japanese iced coffee method gives you a bright, chilled cup in minutes.
Coffee Talk: The Game Where Coffee Is Everything
Coffee Talk, by Indonesian studio Toge Productions, launched in January 2020. You run a late-night café in a fantasy version of Seattle where elves, orcs, mermaids and other fantasy races stop in after dark. You brew drinks from a set of ingredients, experiment with recipes and listen to your customers’ problems. A sequel, Coffee Talk Episode 2: Hibiscus & Butterfly, followed in 2023.
The game captures the role a café plays in a community, a theme as old as coffeehouses themselves. Read about London’s penny universities for the real-world version.
Bring it home: a latte made with steamed milk and a touch of spice, such as a dirty chai latte.
