How Many Espresso Shots Are in a Latte? Sizes Explained
Share
You order a latte and assume there is a fixed amount of coffee in it. There is not. How many espresso shots are in a latte depends on the cup size and the café. As a rule of thumb, small lattes of 8 to 12 oz get one or two shots, a 16 oz latte gets two, and large 20 to 24 oz drinks get two or three, with iced versions often getting the extra shot because ice takes up space.
Below you will find a size chart, the simple ratio math that explains why a bigger latte can taste weaker, caffeine estimates per size and a guide to building your ideal latte at home.
Key takeaways
- Most lattes contain 1 to 2 shots; large or iced lattes often contain 2 to 3.
- A shot is about 1 fl oz (30 ml) of espresso; a double is about 2 fl oz (60 ml).
- Bigger cups with the same number of shots mean a milkier, weaker-tasting drink.
- Caffeine per shot varies widely: one study of 20 cafés measured 51 to 322 mg in a single espresso.
- At home, a double shot in a 10 to 12 oz cup is a balanced starting point.

How many espresso shots in a latte, by size
There is no universal standard, but most cafés follow a pattern close to this. Starbucks, for example, uses one shot in a Short or Tall latte and two in a Grande or a hot Venti in the US, while its iced Venti typically gets three.
| Cup size | Typical name | Typical shots (hot) | Typical shots (iced) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 fl oz (240 ml) | Small, Short | 1 to 2 | Rarely served |
| 12 fl oz (355 ml) | Small or medium, Tall | 1 to 2 | 1 to 2 |
| 16 fl oz (475 ml) | Medium or large, Grande | 2 | 2 |
| 20 fl oz (590 ml) | Large, Venti hot | 2 to 3 | Not usual |
| 24 fl oz (710 ml) | Extra large, Venti iced | Not usual | 3 |
Many independent specialty cafés simply use a double shot in every latte and change only the amount of milk. Chains are more likely to scale shots with size. If you are not sure, just ask: baristas get the question all the time.
What counts as a shot?
A single espresso is about 1 fl oz (30 ml) of coffee, and a double about 2 fl oz (60 ml), usually from around 7 to 9 g and 14 to 20 g of ground coffee. Our guide to what a shot of espresso is covers singles, doubles and how they are measured.
The ratio math: why bigger lattes taste weaker
The flavor of a latte depends on how much espresso there is compared with milk. Here is the formula:
Milk and foam = cup size minus espresso volume, and espresso share = espresso volume divided by cup size.
| Cup size | Shots (1 fl oz each) | Milk and foam | Milk-to-espresso ratio | Espresso share of the drink |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8 oz | 1 | 7 oz | 7 : 1 | about 12% |
| 8 oz | 2 | 6 oz | 3 : 1 | 25% |
| 12 oz | 1 | 11 oz | 11 : 1 | about 8% |
| 12 oz | 2 | 10 oz | 5 : 1 | about 17% |
| 16 oz | 2 | 14 oz | 7 : 1 | about 12% |
| 16 oz | 3 | 13 oz | about 4.3 : 1 | about 19% |
| 20 oz | 2 | 18 oz | 9 : 1 | 10% |
| 20 oz | 3 | 17 oz | about 5.7 : 1 | 15% |
Notice two things. First, a 12 oz latte with one shot is the milkiest drink on the chart, more diluted than a 20 oz latte with two shots. Second, an 8 oz latte with a double shot is very close to a flat white in strength. If you like how a small latte tastes but want more volume, add a shot as you size up. For how lattes compare with cappuccinos and flat whites, see our latte vs cappuccino vs flat white guide.
A quick worked example
You enjoy a 12 oz latte with a double shot (espresso share about 17%) and want a 16 oz version that tastes the same. Target espresso volume = 16 x 0.17 = about 2.7 oz. Since shots come in whole numbers, a triple shot (3 oz, about 19%) will taste closest; a double (12%) will taste noticeably milkier.
Iced lattes
In an iced latte, ice takes up a big share of the cup, often a third or more, so there is less room for milk. That is why chains often add a shot to the largest iced size: the extra espresso keeps the coffee flavor from disappearing as the ice melts. Our iced latte recipe gives home proportions.
How much caffeine is in a latte?
Caffeine depends on the number of shots, not on the milk. The milk adds no caffeine; it only dilutes the taste. The tricky part is that a shot is not a fixed dose. A study published in Food and Function in 2012 bought single espressos from 20 cafés in Glasgow and found caffeine ranging from 51 to 322 mg per serving, depending on the beans, dose and shot size.
Chains publish their own figures. Starbucks lists about 75 mg per espresso shot in the US, which gives the following estimates:
| Starbucks US latte size | Shots | Estimated caffeine |
|---|---|---|
| Short (8 oz) | 1 | about 75 mg |
| Tall (12 oz) | 1 | about 75 mg |
| Grande (16 oz) | 2 | about 150 mg |
| Venti hot (20 oz) | 2 | about 150 mg |
| Venti iced (24 oz) | 3 | about 225 mg |
For most healthy adults, the FDA and EFSA consider up to 400 mg of caffeine a day safe, and EFSA advises staying at or below 200 mg a day during pregnancy and breastfeeding. A large iced latte with three shots can use more than half of a healthy adult’s daily budget on its own. For comparisons with drip coffee, read espresso vs drip caffeine.
Building your latte at home
Use this as a simple guide, then adjust to taste:
- 8 oz cup: double shot, about 6 oz steamed milk. Strong and coffee-forward.
- 10 to 12 oz cup: double shot, 8 to 10 oz steamed milk. The classic café latte.
- 16 oz mug: triple shot, about 13 oz steamed milk. Keeps the coffee flavor in a big drink.
- Decaf or lower caffeine: keep the shots for flavor but use decaf or half caf beans.
Choose an espresso with enough body to cut through milk. Our Italian Roast, our darkest roast, has a thick crema and dark chocolate intensity that holds up in big lattes, and 6 Bean Blend is a bold, chocolatey dark roast built for espresso. For an afternoon latte, Decaf Espresso is water-process decaf roasted dark for espresso, and Half Caf halves the caffeine. Every bag is roasted 1 to 5 days before delivery. Latte shots FAQ
Is a latte one or two shots?
Either, depending on size and café. Many specialty cafés use two shots as standard; many chains use one shot in small sizes and two in medium and large.
How many shots are in a grande latte?
At Starbucks in the US, a hot Grande latte has two shots.
How many shots are in an iced latte?
Usually the same as a hot latte of the same size, but the largest iced sizes often get an extra shot, for example three in a Starbucks Venti iced latte.
Does adding a shot make a latte stronger?
Yes. It raises both the coffee flavor and the caffeine. Each extra shot adds roughly 1 fl oz of espresso to the drink.
How many shots are in a flat white compared to a latte?
A flat white is usually a double shot (often ristretto) in a smaller cup, so it tastes stronger than a typical latte with the same number of shots.
