Easter Coffee Recipes: 4 Coffee Drinks for Easter Brunch

Easter brunch already has its stars: spiced buns, chocolate eggs, a sweet bread in the center of the table. The coffee should play along rather than sit in the corner. These four coffee drinks for Easter brunch borrow directly from the holiday’s own food: a latte that tastes like a hot cross bun, a mocha that uses up chocolate eggs, an Italian-style colomba affogato for dessert, and a citrus cold brew pitcher you can make the night before.

Each recipe gives US and metric measures, works with a moka pot or strong drip if you have no espresso machine, and comes with a dairy-free option.

1. Hot cross bun latte

Hot cross buns are spiced, fruited buns eaten on Good Friday in Britain and much of the Commonwealth. Their spices go beautifully with coffee, so this latte uses a quick syrup of brown sugar, cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg and orange zest.

Spiced bun syrup (makes about 10 servings)

Ingredient US Metric
Brown sugar 1/2 cup 100 g
Water 1/2 cup 120 ml
Cinnamon stick 1 1
Ground allspice 1/4 tsp 0.5 g
Ground nutmeg 1/4 tsp 0.5 g
Orange zest strips 2 2
  1. Simmer everything for 5 minutes, stirring until the sugar dissolves.
  2. Cool, strain into a clean jar and refrigerate for up to 2 weeks.

The latte (serves 1)

  1. Brew 2 shots of espresso (about 60 ml / 2 fl oz), or 1/2 cup (120 ml) of strong moka or drip coffee.
  2. Stir in 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of the syrup.
  3. Add 3/4 cup (180 ml) steamed or frothed milk.
  4. Lay a paper strip across the cup in a cross and dust cinnamon around it for the bun’s cross. Lift the strip.

Dairy-free: oat milk froths well and its natural sweetness suits the spices. Lighter: halve the syrup and add a drop of vanilla.

2. Chocolate egg mocha

Every family has a bowl of leftover chocolate eggs by Monday. This mocha melts them straight into hot espresso.

Ingredient US Metric
Chocolate eggs, chopped (milk or dark) 1 oz 30 g
Espresso or very strong coffee 2 fl oz 60 ml
Milk 3/4 cup 180 ml
Pinch of salt (optional) 1 pinch 1 pinch
  1. Put the chopped chocolate in a mug and pour the hot espresso over it.
  2. Wait 30 seconds, then stir until smooth. Add the pinch of salt if the chocolate is very sweet.
  3. Steam or heat the milk and pour it in. Top with a few chocolate shavings.

Tip: eggs with fondant or caramel centers work too, but the drink gets much sweeter; use half the amount. Dairy-free: use dark chocolate eggs and oat or soy milk. For more on matching chocolate and coffee, see our coffee and chocolate pairing guide.

3. Colomba affogato

In Italy, Easter brings the colomba, a dove-shaped sweet bread made like panettone but without raisins and topped with almonds and pearl sugar. It was turned into a national Easter product in the 1930s by Dino Villani, advertising director of the Milanese company Motta. A slice with espresso is a classic Italian Easter pairing; this dessert takes it one step further.

Ingredient (per serving) US Metric
Colomba slice, about 3/4 inch thick 1 1 (2 cm)
Vanilla gelato or ice cream 1 scoop 1 scoop (about 60 g)
Hot espresso 1 shot (1 fl oz) 30 ml
Toasted sliced almonds 1 tsp 3 g
  1. Toast the colomba slice lightly in a dry pan or toaster, about 1 minute per side.
  2. Put it in a shallow bowl and set the scoop of gelato on top.
  3. Pour the hot espresso over the gelato at the table, then scatter almonds.

No colomba? Use panettone, brioche or a split hot cross bun. Our classic affogato recipe has more variations. Dairy-free: use a coconut or oat-based frozen dessert.

4. Honey-orange cold brew pitcher (serves 8)

Brunch for a crowd means you cannot pull shots all morning. Make this pitcher the night before and let guests help themselves.

Ingredient US Metric
Cold brew, ready to drink 6 cups 1.4 l
Honey 1/4 cup 85 g
Hot water (to dissolve the honey) 1/4 cup 60 ml
Fresh orange juice 1/3 cup 80 ml
Orange slices and ice To serve To serve
  1. Stir the honey into the hot water until dissolved.
  2. Mix it with the cold brew and orange juice in a large pitcher. Refrigerate overnight.
  3. Serve over ice with orange slices. Put a small jug of milk or oat milk alongside.

If you have never made cold brew, our cold brew guide explains the steep. Start it 12 to 24 hours ahead.

Pairing Easter foods with coffee

  • Hot cross buns: a medium roast with nutty, spiced notes.
  • Glazed ham and eggs: a dark, low-acid roast.
  • Colomba and almond cakes: espresso, or a chocolatey Brazil.
  • Carrot cake: a cinnamon-flavored coffee keeps the spice theme going.

Coffees for your Easter table

Cinnabun tastes like an iced cinnamon roll with no added sugar, which makes a shortcut hot cross bun latte if you skip the syrup. Hazelnut pairs nutty, toasty flavor with smooth Brazilian coffee, lovely next to colomba. For the cold brew pitcher, our Cold Brew Coffee is a dark French roast blend already coarse ground for steeping. Browse all flavored coffees; every bag is roasted 1 to 5 days before delivery.

Easter coffee FAQ

Can I make a hot cross bun latte without an espresso machine?

Yes. Use 1/2 cup of strong moka pot or drip coffee and froth the milk with a jar or a whisk.

How long does the spiced syrup keep?

Up to about 2 weeks in a clean, closed jar in the fridge.

What coffee goes with colomba?

Espresso is the Italian choice. A medium-dark roast with chocolate and nut notes also works well.

Can kids have the chocolate egg mocha?

Make it with decaf espresso. Caffeine is discouraged for children and teens, and the chocolate already adds a little.
