Coffee Smoothie: A Banana Breakfast Smoothie With Coffee
Share
To make a coffee smoothie, blend one frozen banana with 1/2 cup of cold brew or chilled strong coffee, 1/2 cup of milk, 2 tablespoons of rolled oats and a spoonful of nut butter until creamy. It takes about three minutes, needs no ice, and gives you breakfast and your morning coffee in a single glass.
This guide covers the base banana coffee smoothie, why each ingredient is there, and easy variations with cold brew, peanut butter, almond butter, chocolate and more.
Why a Banana Coffee Smoothie Works
Coffee on its own is thin and slightly bitter. A frozen banana fixes both: it adds natural sweetness and a thick, almost soft-serve body, so you do not need ice that waters everything down. Oats add more body and a gentle, cereal-like flavor, while nut butter rounds out the bitterness and makes the drink feel like a real meal.
The trick is balance. Too much coffee and the smoothie turns sharp; too little and it tastes like a plain banana shake. About 1/2 cup (120 ml) of strong coffee per frozen banana is the sweet spot for most people.
Coffee Smoothie Recipe (Banana, Oats and Nut Butter)
Makes one 16 oz (470 ml) smoothie.
Ingredients
- 1 large ripe banana, sliced and frozen (about 120 g peeled)
- 1/2 cup (120 ml) cold brew concentrate diluted 1:1, or chilled strong brewed coffee
- 1/2 cup (120 ml) milk of choice (dairy, oat, almond or soy)
- 2 tbsp (about 15 g) old-fashioned rolled oats
- 1 tbsp (16 g) peanut or almond butter
- 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon, optional
- 1 to 2 tsp (5 to 10 ml) maple syrup or honey, optional
- Small pinch of salt
Instructions
- Add the coffee and milk to the blender first so the blades have liquid to work with.
- Add the oats and let them soak for 2 to 3 minutes. This softens them and gives a smoother texture, especially in a standard blender.
- Add the frozen banana, nut butter, cinnamon, salt and sweetener if using.
- Blend on high for 45 to 60 seconds, until completely smooth and no oat flecks remain.
- Taste. Add a splash more milk if it is too thick, or a few frozen banana slices if it is too thin.
- Pour into a glass and drink right away. Smoothies with banana start to darken and separate after about 20 minutes.
Choosing the Coffee for Your Smoothie
Any cold, strong coffee works, but each option gives a slightly different result.
| Coffee option | Amount per smoothie | Flavor and texture | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cold brew (diluted) | 1/2 cup (120 ml) | Smooth, chocolatey, low bitterness | Daily make-ahead smoothies |
| Chilled drip coffee, double strength | 1/2 cup (120 ml) | Brighter, more classic coffee taste | Using up leftover morning coffee |
| Espresso, chilled | 1 to 2 shots (1 to 2 oz / 30 to 60 ml) | Intense, roasty | A stronger coffee punch |
| Instant coffee | 1 to 2 tsp dissolved in 2 tbsp water | Bold, quick | Mornings with zero prep |
| Coffee ice cubes | 4 to 6 cubes | Thick, frosty, no dilution | Hot summer days |
Cold brew is our favorite here. It is mellow enough to blend with fruit without turning sour, and you can keep a jar in the fridge for the week. If you have never made it, our guide on how to make cold brew at home has the full method. For the fastest option, a scoop of Premium Instant Coffee dissolved in a little hot water and cooled does the job in seconds.
Coffee ice cubes are worth a mention on their own. Pour leftover coffee into an ice cube tray, freeze it, and use the cubes in place of some of the liquid. You get a colder, thicker smoothie with zero dilution.
Coffee Smoothie Variations
Peanut Butter Mocha
Add 1 tbsp (6 g) unsweetened cocoa powder to the base recipe and use peanut butter. It tastes like a chocolate peanut butter cup with a coffee kick.
Almond Butter and Cinnamon
Use almond butter, increase the cinnamon to 1/2 tsp and add a drop of vanilla extract. Lighter and slightly spicy, great with a medium roast.
Overnight Oats Smoothie
Soak 1/4 cup (20 g) oats in the coffee and milk in the fridge overnight, then blend in the morning with the frozen banana. The extra oats make it thicker and more filling, and the pre-soak gives a silky texture.
Protein Coffee Smoothie
Add one scoop of your favorite vanilla or chocolate protein powder and an extra splash of milk. If you like this idea, our article on protein coffee has more ways to combine the two.
Date and Tahini
Swap the nut butter for tahini and the syrup for one or two pitted dates. Nutty, caramel-sweet and not too heavy.
Banana-Free Version
Not a banana fan? Use 1/2 cup (about 120 g) frozen cauliflower rice or 1/3 of a frozen avocado for creaminess, then sweeten with dates or maple syrup. The flavor becomes more coffee-forward.
Tips for a Better Coffee Smoothie
- Freeze ripe bananas. Bananas with brown speckles are sweeter. Peel, slice and freeze them flat on a tray, then store them in a bag.
- Use strong coffee. Milk, banana and nut butter all soften coffee flavor, so brew a little stronger than you would for drinking.
- Blend oats first if your blender is weak. Pulse the dry oats into a powder before adding anything else.
- Mind the extras. Nut butter, syrup and protein powder add up quickly. If you track what you eat, our article on how many calories are in coffee breaks down common add-ins.
- Use fresh beans. A freshly roasted coffee brings real flavor, not just bitterness, to a blended drink.
Coffee Smoothie FAQ
Can I use hot coffee in a smoothie?
It is better not to. Hot coffee melts the frozen banana and gives you a warm, thin drink. Let it cool completely, or brew it the night before and keep it in the fridge.
How much caffeine is in a coffee smoothie?
About as much as the coffee you put in. Half a cup of brewed coffee typically has roughly half the caffeine of a full cup, while cold brew concentrate can be much stronger, so dilute it. Most healthy adults are advised to stay under 400 mg of caffeine per day, per FDA guidance; if you are pregnant, have a medical condition or take medication, ask your doctor.
Can I make a coffee smoothie the night before?
You can prep the ingredients, but the blended smoothie is best fresh. A good compromise is to soak the oats in coffee and milk overnight, then blend with the frozen banana in the morning.
Do I need to cook the oats?
No. Rolled oats blend well raw, especially after a short soak in the liquid. Quick oats soften even faster. Steel-cut oats are too hard for most blenders unless soaked for several hours.
