How Many Ounces in a Cup of Coffee? Cup Sizes in Ounces and Milliliters
Share
Ask five people how many ounces in a cup of coffee and you can get five different answers, and most of them are right. A measuring cup holds 8 US fluid ounces. The cup markings on most drip coffee makers mean about 5 ounces. A typical mug holds 10 to 12 ounces, and a café small often starts at 12. That gap is why a 12-cup coffee maker fills only about five big mugs, and why caffeine and calorie numbers can be hard to compare.
Here is a single chart that untangles every kind of cup, in ounces and milliliters, plus the math to convert between them.
Key takeaways
- US measuring cup: 8 fl oz (about 237 ml). US nutrition labels use 240 ml.
- Coffee maker cup: usually 5 fl oz (about 148 ml); a 12-cup pot holds about 60 oz.
- Metric cup: 250 ml in many countries; Japanese cup: 200 ml.
- Espresso shot: about 1 fl oz (30 ml) single, 2 fl oz (60 ml) double.
- 1 US fluid ounce = 29.57 ml; 1 UK fluid ounce = 28.41 ml.

How many ounces in a cup of coffee: the chart
| What “cup” means | US fl oz | Milliliters | Where you see it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Espresso shot (single) | about 1 | about 30 | Espresso drinks |
| Demitasse cup | 2–3 | 60–90 | Espresso, Turkish coffee |
| Coffee maker cup | 5 (some brands 6) | 148 (177) | Drip machine carafes and water tanks |
| Traditional teacup or small coffee cup | 6 | 177 | Older recipes, some brewing guides |
| Japanese cup | about 6.8 | 200 | Japanese recipes |
| US measuring cup | 8 | 237 | Recipes |
| US nutrition label cup | about 8.1 | 240 | Nutrition Facts panels |
| Metric cup | about 8.5 | 250 | Recipes in Australia, Canada and elsewhere |
| Standard mug | 10–12 | 296–355 | Home |
| Large mug or travel mug | 14–16 | 414–473 | Commuting |
In short: if a recipe says one cup, assume 8 oz. If your coffee maker says one cup, assume 5 oz. If a study or article says a cup of coffee contains a certain amount of caffeine, check which size it means.
Why coffee makers use 5-ounce cups
Drip coffee makers usually count in small cups. Mr. Coffee, for example, defines a cup as 5 ounces, so a full 12-cup pot holds about 60 ounces, or roughly 1.8 liters. Some other brands use 5 or 6 ounces; the manual or the carafe markings will tell you which.
The marketing upside is obvious: a 12-cup maker sounds bigger than a 5-mug maker. The practical downside is that if you scoop coffee by the number of cups on the carafe, but fill 12-ounce mugs, your math will not match. Our guide to better drip coffee covers dosing for your machine.
Café sizes in ounces and milliliters
Coffee shop sizes vary by chain, but many follow the sizes Starbucks popularized. Its size names trace back to Howard Schultz’s Il Giornale coffee bars of the 1980s, inspired by Italian cafés, and venti and trenta are simply Italian for 20 and 30.
| Size | US fl oz | Milliliters |
|---|---|---|
| Demi | 3 | 89 |
| Short | 8 | 237 |
| Tall | 12 | 355 |
| Grande | 16 | 473 |
| Venti (hot) | 20 | 591 |
| Venti (iced) | 24 | 710 |
| Trenta (iced only) | 30 | 887 |
In much of Europe, sizes are smaller. An espresso is about 30 ml, a cappuccino is often around 150–180 ml, and a filter coffee in a café may be 200–250 ml. Our coffee mug guide looks at common mug sizes and shapes.
Worked examples
How many mugs does a 12-cup coffee maker make?
12 cups × 5 oz = 60 oz. Divide by your mug: 60 ÷ 12 = 5 twelve-ounce mugs, or 60 ÷ 8 = 7.5 eight-ounce cups.
How much coffee for one coffee maker cup?
At a 1:16 ratio, a 5-oz (148 ml) cup needs 148 ÷ 16 ≈ 9 g of coffee. An 8-oz cup needs about 15 g, and a 12-oz mug about 22 g. For more ratios, see our coffee to water ratio guide.
Converting milliliters to ounces
Divide milliliters by 29.57 for US fluid ounces. A 250 ml cup is 250 ÷ 29.57 ≈ 8.5 oz. A 350 ml mug is about 11.8 oz.
US vs UK ounces
A UK fluid ounce is slightly smaller (28.41 ml). Ten UK fluid ounces is about 284 ml, while ten US fluid ounces is about 296 ml. The difference rarely matters for coffee, but it explains small mismatches between British and American recipes.
Why cup size matters for caffeine
Caffeine numbers are only meaningful with a volume attached. The FDA notes that an 8-oz cup of brewed coffee typically contains about 80 to 100 mg of caffeine, and that up to 400 mg a day is generally not associated with negative effects for most healthy adults. But a 16-oz café coffee is two of those 8-oz cups, and a 20-oz one is two and a half. Our article on how much caffeine is in coffee breaks it down by brew method.
