Central Perk: The Coffee Shop From Friends and Where to Visit It Today

Central Perk is the fictional Greenwich Village coffee shop where Rachel, Ross, Monica, Chandler, Joey and Phoebe spend endless hours on an orange couch in Friends. The café was a set on the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank, California, but today fans can visit the Central Perk set on the Warner Bros. Studio Tour Hollywood and drink coffee at official Central Perk Coffeehouse locations in Boston and New York’s Times Square.

Here is everything you need to know about the most famous coffee shop in TV history: how it worked on screen, where to find it in real life, and how to recreate a Central Perk–style drink in your own kitchen.

Central Perk on Screen: The Friends Coffee Shop

Friends, created by David Crane and Marta Kauffman, aired on NBC from 1994 to 2004 across ten seasons. Central Perk is where the pilot opens and where countless conversations, breakups and reunions happen over the following decade.

The café works almost like a seventh main character. It has a few signature details that fans instantly recognize:

  • The orange couch in front of the window, somehow always free for the six friends.
  • Oversized mugs, closer to soup bowls than coffee cups.
  • Gunther, the bleached-blond manager played by James Michael Tyler, quietly in love with Rachel.
  • Rachel’s waitressing years, which give the show many of its funniest moments of terrible service.
  • Phoebe’s performances, including her famous song “Smelly Cat.”

The show premiered just as the American coffeehouse boom was taking off, and Central Perk captured the idea of the café as a “third place”: somewhere between home and work where you could linger for hours over a single latte.

Where to Visit Central Perk Today

Central Perk itself was never a real business in New York. It was built on a soundstage. Still, there are now several ways for fans to step inside the world of the show. Details below were verified from news and tourism sources; always check official websites for current hours, tickets and menus before you go.

Location What it is Where
Warner Bros. Studio Tour Hollywood The real Central Perk set plus a Central Perk Café, inside Stage 48 Burbank, California
Central Perk Coffeehouse Boston First permanent Central Perk coffeehouse, opened in November 2023 205 Newbury Street, Boston
Central Perk Coffeehouse Times Square New York location with an Orange Room, opened in December 2025 20 Times Square, New York City

The Boston and Times Square coffeehouses

The Boston coffeehouse on Newbury Street opened in November 2023, shortly after the death of Matthew Perry, who played Chandler. News reports at the opening described a menu of show-themed coffee blends with names such as “How You Doin’?” and “Moo Point” decaf, plus food inspired by the series, including a Moist Maker turkey sandwich.

The Times Square location followed in late 2025. It is not a replica of the set, but it includes an Orange Room and visual nods to the show.

The studio tour

For the most authentic experience, the Warner Bros. Studio Tour Hollywood ends at Stage 48, where visitors can see the Central Perk set and sit on the famous couch, then grab a drink at the on-site café.

What Do the Friends Drink at Central Perk?

The show rarely spells out exact orders, and the giant mugs are usually filled with something milky and frothy. Most of what the friends drink looks like lattes and cappuccinos, plus plenty of plain coffee and the occasional tea.

If you want the look and feel of a Central Perk drink, think big mug, lots of foamed milk and a comforting, not-too-strong coffee base. Our guide to latte vs cappuccino vs flat white explains the difference between these milk drinks.

Recipe: A Central Perk–Style Big Mug Latte

This original recipe is inspired by the oversized mugs of the show. It makes one generous mug, about 16 fl oz (480 ml).

Ingredients

  • 2 shots of espresso, about 2 fl oz (60 ml), or 4 fl oz (120 ml) of strong brewed coffee
  • 10 fl oz (300 ml) whole milk or oat milk
  • 1–2 tsp (5–10 ml) vanilla or caramel syrup, optional
  • A pinch of cinnamon or cocoa for the top, optional

Steps

  1. Warm a large mug with hot water, then empty it.
  2. Brew the espresso or strong coffee directly into the mug. Stir in the syrup if using.
  3. Heat the milk to about 140–150°F (60–65°C), hot but not boiling.
  4. Froth the milk until it doubles in volume. A French press, a handheld frother or a jar with a lid all work. See our guide on how to froth milk without a steam wand.
  5. Pour the milk into the coffee, holding back the foam with a spoon, then spoon the foam on top.
  6. Dust with cinnamon or cocoa and find a comfy couch.

Variations and tips

  • Cappuccino version: use only 6 fl oz (180 ml) of milk with more foam.
  • Iced version: pour the coffee and cold milk over ice and skip the foam.
  • Flavored shortcut: brew a flavored coffee like French vanilla instead of adding syrup.
  • No espresso machine? Use a moka pot or brew drip coffee at double strength.

Plan a Friends Marathon Coffee Bar

Ten seasons is a lot of television. A self-serve coffee bar keeps the marathon going. Original, just-for-fun ideas:

  • A “We Were on a Break” decaf pot for late-night episodes.
  • A frothing station with oat milk and whole milk.
  • Big mugs only, of course.
  • Muffins and cookies, since Rachel’s trifle is best left to the show.
